Brazilian Soapstone

Fossilised minerals built up around some small object.

The soft, layered shale beds to be found in our local rivers often contain these round/oval formations of harder rock that has formed around such diverse prehistoric items as twigs, bones, teeth and shell . Water erodes the softer rock to expose them over millenia. This work gives the impression of a bonded cluster of these curiosities even though carved from one piece of soapstone.
